From creative projects to everyday needs, look no further than Clayton’s public library for hands-on tools and resources beyond books.
Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library is excited to introduce a brand-new way for cardholders to explore, create, and learn. The Library of Things is now available, offering a wide variety of non-traditional items that can be borrowed with a library card.
This growing collection is designed to support creativity, lifelong learning, and everyday life. New items include a DSLR camera, GoPro, tripod, CD boombox, portable DVD player, and headphones. These resources join existing favorites like puzzles, board games, outdoor activities, and Launchpad tablets - all now part of the Library of Things. Visitors can explore the full list of items offered and discover what the Library of Things has to offer by visiting claytonlibrarync.org.
The Library of Things offers tools and experiences that can be used at home without the need to spend money or find extra storage. Whether trying something before buying it or needing equipment for a short-term project, the library is making it easier to do just that.
“Sometimes, the only thing stopping someone from starting a new hobby or project is the cost,” said Library Manager Melissa Poole. “Technology and equipment can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, which is a big investment for most people. By providing these items through the library, we remove that barrier and give everyone a chance to explore new interests without worrying about the price.”
Borrowing from the Library of Things is convenient. Patrons must be at least 18 and have a Clayton library card in good standing. Each household may check out one technology item at a time. Items can be placed on hold and are loaned for 21 days with no renewals. Patrons must also sign an agreement outlining proper care for the equipment.
“We have processes in place to make sure these tools stay in good condition so others in our community can enjoy them too,” said Poole. “This is a shared collection, and we ask that everyone treat these items with care to keep them safe and ready for the next person.”
The goal of the Library of Things is to support local creators, entrepreneurs, and families who want to explore new ideas and make the most of their free time.
